Word Groups

Sort 16 words into 4 secret groups. New daily puzzle every midnight — or play unlimited.

How to play Word Groups

Word Groups is a free word grouping puzzle: 16 words, 4 hidden connections. Some groups are simple categories (card games, farm animals), while others hide wordplay — words that all follow "POP", palindromes, or slang meanings. Select four words and hit Submit; you can make four mistakes before the round ends.

The colors reveal the difficulty ladder: yellow is the gentle one, green takes a second look, blue makes you think, and purple is the trap-laden wordplay group. If you get the dreaded “One away!”, three of your four picks are right — swap your shakiest choice.

A fresh grouping puzzle every day

The Daily puzzle is identical for everyone, so you can compare emoji results with friends — share yours with one tap when you finish. Miss a day or want more? Unlimited mode deals a new 16-word grid whenever you like. Learn more strategies in our Word Groups guide, or try the other word games in the Den below.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Word Groups?

You get a grid of 16 words that belong to 4 hidden groups of 4 — for example, four dog breeds or four words that can follow "STONE". Tap 4 words you think belong together and press Submit. Find all four groups before you run out of your 4 allowed mistakes.

What does "One away!" mean?

It means 3 of your 4 selected words belong to the same group — you are one word away from a correct set. Swap out the word you are least sure about and try again.

What do the group colors mean?

Each color is a difficulty level: yellow groups are the most straightforward, green a bit sneakier, blue harder, and purple the trickiest — usually wordplay like shared prefixes or double meanings.

Is there a new puzzle every day?

Yes — the Daily puzzle is the same for every player and refreshes at midnight local time. If one puzzle a day is not enough, switch to Unlimited mode for endless grouping puzzles.

Any tips for solving grouping puzzles?

Start with the group you are most confident about, and beware of trap words: puzzles deliberately include words that seem to fit two categories. If a category looks too easy with five candidates, one of them belongs somewhere else.
